Genesis

3

1NOW the serpent was more subtle than all the wild animals that Yahvah God had made. And the serpent said to the woman, Has God truly said that you must not eat of any tree of the garden? 2And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of all the trees of the garden; 3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, You must not eat of it, nor will you touch it, lest you die. 4And the serpent said to the woman, You will surely not die; 5For God knows that in the day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.

6So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and that the tree was delightful to look at, she took some of the fruit, and ate, and she also gave to her husband with her; and he ate. 7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8And they heard the voice of Yahvah God walking in the garden in the cool of the day; and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahvah God among the trees of the garden. 9And Yahvah God called to Adam, and said to him, Where are you, Adam? 10And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and when I saw that I was naked, I hid myself.

11And Yahvah God said to him, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded that you should not eat? 12And Adam said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me the fruit from the tree, and I ate. 13And Yahvah God said to the woman, What is this that you have done? And the woman said, The serpent deluded me, and I ate.

14And Yahvah God said to the serpent, Because you have done this thing, you are cursed above all cattle, and above all animals of the field; you will go on your belly, and you will eat dust all the days of your life; 15And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your posterity and her posterity; her posterity will tread your head under foot, and you will strike him in his heel.

16To the woman he said, I will greatly multiply your pain and your conception; in pain you will bring forth children, and you will be dependent on your husband, and he will rule over you.

17And to Adam he said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, You will not eat of it, cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow you will eat the fruits of it all the days of your life; 18Also thorns and thistles it will bring forth to you; and you will eat the herb of the field; 19In the sweat of your face you will eat bread, until you return to the ground; out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you will return.

20So Adam called his wife's name Eve because she was the mother of all living. 21And Yahvah God made for Adam and for his wife coats of skin, and clothed them.

22Then Yahvah God said, Look, the man has become like one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and also take of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever; 23Therefore Yahvah God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground where he was taken from.

24So Yahvah God drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the path to the tree of life.
