Genesis

11

1NOW the whole earth spoke one language and with one manner of speech. 2And it came to pass, as men journeyed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Sinar; and they settled there. 3And they said to one another, Come, let us make bricks and burn them with fire. And they had bricks for stone, and slime for mortar. 4Then they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top may reach to heaven; and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the face of the whole earth.

5And Yahvah came down to see the city and the tower which men were building. 6And Yahvah said, Look, they are one people, and they all have one language; and they have reasoned to do this thing; and now nothing will prevent them from doing that which they have imagined to do. 7Come, let us go down there, and divide their language so that they may not understand one another's speech. 8So Yahvah scattered them abroad from there on the face of all the earth; and they ceased from building the city. 9Therefore, they called the name of it Babel; because it was there that Yahvah confounded the language of all the earth; and from there Yahvah scattered them on the face of all the earth.

10These are the descendants of Shem: Shem was 100 years old, and begot Arphakhashar, 2 years after the flood; 11And Shem lived after he begot Arphakhashar 500 years, and begot sons and daughters. 12And Arphakhashar lived 35 years, and begot Shalah; 13And Arphakhashar lived after he begot Shalah 403 years, and begot sons and daughters. 14And Shalah lived 30 years, and begot Eber; 15And Shalah lived after he begot Eber 403 years, and begot sons and daughters. 16And Eber lived 34 years, and begot Peleg: 17And Eber lived after he begot Peleg 430 years, and begot sons and daughters. 18And Peleg lived 30 years, and begot Rau; 19And Peleg lived after he begot Rau 209 years, and begot sons and daughters. 20And Rau lived 32 years, and begot Serug; 21And Rau lived after he begot Serug 207 years, and begot sons and daughters. 22And Serug lived 30 years, and begot Nahor; 23And Serug lived after he begot Nahor 200 years, and begot sons and daughters. 24And Nahor lived 29 years, and begot Terah; 25And Nahor lived after he begot Terah 119 years, and begot sons and daughters. 26And Terah lived 70 years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27Now these are the descendants of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot. 28And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans. 29And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves; the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah. 30But Sarai was barren; she had no child. 31And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan: and they came as far as Haran, and they settled there. 32And the days of Terah were 205 years; and Terah died in Haran.
