1991 United Nations Sanctions against Iraq

Noah's story moves to a date 150 days later. Here the waters recede and the Ark comes to rest. In modern headlines the date was June 19, 1991 and the United Nations had just adopted the sanctions regime that would last for many years.

Background

The 17th day of the 7th month of Noah's 600th year maps using day-for-a-day to Wednesday, June 19, 1991. This is when the waters had receded enough for the Ark to come to rest.

Two days earlier, on Monday, June 17, 1991, the United Nations had voted sanctions against Iraq. Those sanctions would be the subject of renewed bombing on another prophetic story in December of 1998. For now, though, they were just beginning.

The armies that had assembled in the Middle East to fight this war were also receding, returning to their home bases around the world. In many ways this was the last war fought this way as many nations would disarm at least partially because of the corresponding collapse of the Soviet Union.

This theoretical date is also important in several other reguards. Yeltsin went on a trip to the United States this date. The Americans were not to sure what to do with his visit as the Soviet Union was still in existance and Yeltsin was just a leader from one of the Republics. Like the governor of California traveling to Moscow, what was Washington DC to do? He also appeared a little drunk, which did not help matters.

James Baker, who would be a prominent figure in the peace initiative later in the year would get Israeli approval this date in order to start the peace process.

By June 20, 1991, Bonn voted to move its capital back to Berlin.

By June 25, 1991, martial law in Kuwait also came to and end. For the regular Kuwaiti the war was now over.

In one of the rare cases in the timeline were a natural disaster was playing in the headlines, Mount Pinatubo in the Philipines was continuing a large eruption. The United States was evacuating 20,000 dependents back to the mainland. It would eventually close down two large bases.

The story continued, but not in the middle east. The next date was Gorbachev's resignation from his post in the Soviet Communist party.
